Description

Colt .45: A Henry Nettleton-inspected U.S. Model with Beaded Holster. This gun, serial # 48096, was manufactured in August or September of 1878. Sometime after it came into civilian use it was converted into a "sheriff's model". The barrel was shortened to 3 1/8" and was professionally nickel-plated after the barrel was shortened. The action is crisp and tight, and the gun retains virtually 100% of its nickel finish, which only shows light wear, as do the Colt eagle grips. The bore is very good. A pleasing example of a "sheriff's model" with an early serial number.

Nettleton is the most sought after inspector because he inspected during the Custer period. It is known that some of the Nettleton guns were sent back to Colt, had their barrels shortened and nickeled for what they called "Scout" guns. They were then reissued to either officers or scouts. This gun could certainly fall into this category.
