Description

1824 Spring Versus Langan Bare-Knuckle Boxing Match, Commemorative Jug. Tom Spring was English champion from 1821 until he retired in 1824. Jack Langan was an Irish fighter who Spring defeated twice. This pottery jug was produced to commemorate the iconic fight between the English heavyweight Tom Spring (1795-1851) and Ireland's Jack Langan. The bout was held at the Worcester Race course in 1824. The match lasted 2 1/2 hours and Spring was victorious. This jug is unmarked, but clearly an example of English Liverpool creamware, possibly Herculaneum. It is 9" tall, 11" wide from tip of spout to outside edge of handle. Item has been examined with a blacklight, and there is no detectible sign of repairs. Excellent condition.
