Description

As worn on Skylab

Skylab I (SL-2) Backup Pilot Bruce McCandless II: Pair of Shoes with Metal Triangular Shoe Cleats on the Bottoms. A pair of high-top, brown canvas lace-up shoes with "Mc Candless" and "LH (RH)" printed on the toes. On the bottom is a 4.25" long adjustable track into which is screwed a heavy metal cleat of a triangular shape, blue for left shoe and red for right. The Skylab space station's floors, ceilings, and work stations had a metal grid. These shoe cleats were inserted into the triangle grid and the heels were rotated to lock the cleats to the grid for stability; rotating in the other direction freed the cleats for mobility. Sewn inside each shoe is a cloth label with the following information:

PORTABLE BOOT RESTRAINT
P/N: BW-2093-003 (004)-13 LH (RH)
S/N: 038 SIZE: 8½C
CREWMAN: McCANDLESS
MFD BY: WELSON & CO, INC
DATE OF MFG: 1-25-73

SHOE ASSY, PFR, LH (RH)
P/N: BW-2092-001-13
S/N: 038

The underside of each cleat has the following information printed:
P/N: BW-2091-003 (LH) or BW-2091-004 (RH)
S/N: 038

These shoes would likely have traveled with McCandless had he actually flown on the mission. This complete pair of shoes, though not flown, is a real prize for the serious collector. Excellent.
