Description
An original and exclusive Shuttle astronauts-only patch
Robert F. Overmyer's Owned and Worn Flight Jacket with Rare "Mach 25" Patch Originally from His Personal Collection, with Signed Cover and Office Nameplate. His size 42R winter flight suit jacket bearing a 4" diameter STS-5 embroidered mission insignia patch on the right chest. On the left chest is a highly desirable Mach 25 patch, 3.125" x 2". These patches, which were astronaut-designed and originated, were only presented to shuttle astronauts after their first mission (the shuttle is the only vehicle capable of flying 25 times the speed of sound). They have been reproduced, but originals are only available from flown astronauts. Per the neck tag, this insulated, zip-front jacket was made by Land Manufacturing, Inc. Beneath, there is an additional tag, "OVERMYER". It has two snap-close pockets on the front and an additional one on the upper left arm. Also included in this lot is Overmyer's 9.5" x 1.25" office nameplate and a signed Shuttle cover. Jacket with light wear, fine. Cover and nameplate excellent.Though he didn't fly into space until Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-5) in 1982, Overmyer had a long career as an astronaut. He was chosen as an astronaut for the Air Force's MOL (Manned Orbiting Laboratory) program in 1966. Upon that program's cancellation in 1969, he was selected by NASA and served Apollo 17 and ASTP as a support crew member and CapCom. He also worked in the Skylab and the Shuttle ALT (Approach and Landing Tests) programs. After serving as a lead investigator into the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, he resigned from NASA in 1986. He died in 1996 while testing a homebuilt aircraft.
