Description

Ex. Charles Conrad

Apollo 12 Lunar Module Flown Engraved Dessert Spoon Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Charles Conrad, with Original Pouch. This 6.75" long Community Stainless spoon is engraved on the handle: "CHARLES 'PETE' CONRAD/ LM - 6 CDR" to the right of an engraved NASA logo. On the back of the handle is the "Community Stainless" mark. The original clear plastic snap-close pouch is included but neither piece of the original Velcro is still present. Eating in space made a giant leap forward during the Apollo era as they had the luxury of both cold and hot water. The invention of a device called the "spoon-bowl" allowed a more normal eating experience of rehydrated food; a plastic zipper was opened and the food was removed with a spoon. The moisture content in the food allowed it to cling to the spoon. Apollo astronauts were thus the first to use eating utensils such as this spoon in flight. A very important item for Conrad. Just think, this was used by him to eat meals on the surface of the moon in the Lunar Module Intrepid. Originally from the Richard Stonely collection but the provenance documents were lost before it was sold at Regency/Superior a few years ago. His Command Module Flown spoon is also in this auction. A rare opportunity. Pouch torn at top, spoon very fine. From the collection of Lee Nunn.
