Description

Apollo 11 Crew: Training-Used Launch Emergency Procedures Page from the NASA "CSM-107 Launch Operations Checklist" Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, Signed and Certified, with Signed Letter of Authenticity. A 5.5" x 8" pink cardstock page, dated June 1, 1969, with the numbers L 5-9 and L 5-10. Signed on the front in blue ink: "Used in Training for Apollo XI Buzz Aldrin". Very fine.

Aldrin describes the use and significance of this page in a signed LOA on his letterhead, reading as follows: "Accompanying this letter is a sheet numbered 5-9 and 5-10 from the CSM 107 (Apollo 11) Launch Operations Checklist, SKB32100080-306. It was part of the complete manual that was used in the Command Module Apollo Mission Simulator at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. The sheet is from Section 5 titled: Launch Emergency Procedures.

"The entire checklist, including this actual sheet, was used by all three Apollo 11 crew members: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and myself. We rehearsed steps from this section when training for spacecraft cabin fire and other emergency events. All pages in this section have a red tint to assist rapid location during such occurrences.

"Side 5-9 has parts D, E, and F on how to reconfigure the power bus if required, based on which sub-system needed this function. Side 5-8 has procedures to perform if we lost two fuel cells at liftoff. As commander, Neil would take control during such emergency conditions. Using this sheet, he would coordinate all needed activity with Mike and myself.

"It was important to rehearse the flow of this activity in the simulator. It was an excellent learning device and the checklist was an important tool to insure our correct performance. This training was a key step which enabled our flight to make the first manned lunar landing on July 20, 1969.

"I kept the checklist after our mission as a reminder of the all the training that took place back in 1969. I have written on page 5-9: 'Used in training for Apollo XI' and signed that page. A copy of the checklist cover page is included."
