Description

Apollo 1 Gilt Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gus Grissom, with a Signed COA from Betty Grissom. A 32mm medal featuring the mission insignia on the obverse which depicts a command/ service module flying over the southeastern United States. The moon is in the distance, symbolizing the program's eventual goal. The reverse has "WHITE GRISSOM CHAFFEE APOLLO 1" around; the center was left blank where the flight information would have been engraved after the mission. It is still in its original Fliteline case. These never flew, but were prepared to go on the first Apollo mission with Gus Grissom, Ed White II, and Roger Chaffee who were all tragically killed in a training exercise fire. Extremely rare and desirable. A beautiful medal.

Included with this lot is a signed letter from Grissom's widow Betty Grissom reading, in full: "The Virgil I. 'Gus' Grissom Collection. The enclosed medallion is one of the originals made at the request of my husband for his Apollo 1 flight. The mission ended in tragedy on the launch pad with a fire in the spacecraft on January 27, 1967. Gus and fellow astronauts, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, gave their lives in pursuit of the national goal to land on the moon."
