Description

Admiral Richard E. Byrd: First Antarctic Expedition Archive. Carroll Baldwin Foster, Jr. Archive comprising four Autograph Letters Signed (49 pages) to Al C. Edwards and Eleanor Turnbull, six original envelopes with various stamps and designs ("Byrd Antarctic Expedition"), seven original telegrams and a signed Christmas card on "Byrd Antarctic Expedition" note card, circa 1928-1929. Overall very good condition. Foster (1908-1989), a University of Pennsylvania graduate, joined Byrd's first Antarctic Expedition in 1928 as an emergency fireman aboard the "Eleanor Bolling". He had signed on to sail only as far as the Canal Zone, but became a full member of the crew when one of the regular firemen became ill. He was among eighty-one officers and crew awarded Congressional medals in 1930 for their participation in the expedition. Following the conclusion of the trip, Foster spent two years directing a traveling exhibit about the mission.

Some excerpts: "... Tomorrow or the day following, we will be practically at the extreme end of the Bay of Whalers, then Floyd Bennett Harbor and Little America... This has been our best trip - and supposedly our Waterloo - but we are about to disprove that... [we are] some eight hundred miles from the South Pole... There is much doubt in the minds of our leaders and those who know as to whether she [the "Eleanor Bolling"] will ever return... The first thing to spontaneously arouse the red blood in everyman's veins was the cracking up of the ice on which we were unloading the day following our arrival... Our 'Eleanor' lurched over to one side in the same action... Men overboard - floundering in icy waters! One man dangled over the barrier on a line... Depart from your hum-drum existence and join the Byrd Expedition in Denedin in November... be in the vicinity of the South Pole when the initial flight is made over the Pole itself... Great risks, damnable work, but worth it a million times over and over."

We are also selling two Byrd personally-owned parkas in this sale.
