Description

A mustard seed carried during America's first-ever spacewalk.

Gemini 4: Rare NASA In-Flight Photo Signed by Ed White II Presented with a Flown Mustard Seed Directly from His Personal Collection. A visually stunning and spiritually significant matted and framed display of 14.25" x 15" overall. It consists of a seldom-seen 10" x 8" red-letter "NASA/ S-65-30549" numbered photo, a close-up of White taken in flight by Jim McDivitt, signed boldly: "Edward H White II". Beneath is mounted an engraved plate: "Edward H. White II on Board GT-IV/ Mustard Seed Carried on EVA" just above a single mustard seed against a white background. This is from a small group of the tiny seeds that White carried in a pocket of his spacesuit while he performed the first extra-vehicular activity of the U.S. space program. Excellent condition.

The mustard seed was used, likely for its extremely diminutive size, by Jesus in His teachings on faith in the Bible. Luke 17:6 reads: "And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you" (KJV). Matthew 17:20 reads: "...verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (KJV).White took these into orbit as a symbol of his religious faith.

Included with this lot is a photocopy of a letter from Norman Vincent Peale dated just before the Gemini 4 mission. It reads, in small part: "You don't need to take a mustard seed with you as a symbol of your faith; you have the faith itself, and the inner sturdiness that will carry you through this tremendous and rewarding experience."

Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.
