"Glorifying the American Girl–The Great Ziegfeld". (1869-1932) With the possible exception of George M. Cohan, no one did more to popularize Broadway and musical comedy than the great showman, Flo Ziegfeld. He was born in Chicago in 1869. In keeping with that city’s reputation for brash commercialism, he imported military bands from Europe to perform at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. At the same time, he took over management for the "Great Sandow" who became a big hit at the fair. In 1897, he married musical comedy star Anna Held who suggested to him a revue based on those she had seen in Paris, complete with beautiful chorus girls, elaborate costumes and comedy routines. The idea came to life with the first installment of the "Ziegfeld Follies of 1907" starring Held. The shows were such a success that yearly installments were produced for the next twenty years. The "Follies" were vehicles for such talent as Eddie Cantor, Will Rogers and W. C. Fields. He produced "Showboat" in 1927–other Ziegfeld shows were "Kid Boots", "Rio Rita", "Whoopee" and "Bittersweet". After his divorce from Held, he married Billie Burke in 1914. Ziegfeld had a genius for marketing– packaging sex appeal in a tasteful package that went beyond burlesque, appealing to a popular and affluent audience. This lot features a collection of thirty-nine pieces of sheet music related to the Ziegfeld Follies, dating from 1908 through its depiction in Hollywood in the 1930s. There are several songs featuring the two wives of Flo Ziegfeld, Anna Held and Billie Burke, as well as veterans of the follies, such as Helen Morgan. Condition varies with some minor duplication.
