Description

"Jesse James under the Black Flag": Promotional Materials from the Sympathetic 1920 Silent Film about Jesse James, from the Harry Hoffman Collection. This movie essentially told the story as James partisans saw it. Harry Hoffman actually portrayed Cole Younger in the film and Jesse James, Jr. played his father! Included among the seven promotional 8" x 10" glossies is one of a scene in which both appear, with blue ink annotation in Hoffman's hand. Other scenes in the photos:
Zerelda and Archie after the Pinkerton bomb exploded,
Jesse's deathbed,
Jesse and Zerelda,
A gunfight,
Jesse with his horse,
Outside the Northfield bank.

Also included are sixteen postcard-size exhibit cards from the 1927 silent film Jesse James, in which Fred Thompson portrayed Jesse. In movie collecting circles, promotional materials from both of these films are considered very rare, but this group is especially significant because of the Harry Hoffman association.
