Description
First Modern Appearance of Captain America, Near Mint
Avengers #4 Twin Cities pedigree (Marvel, 1964) CGC Near Mint 9.4 Off-white to white pages. Captain America is poised to become even more of a household name with a new movie about to be released, though comic fans have loved this character all along. One of the most memorable stories Stan Lee ever wrote was this one, which had the Avengers team discovering a mysterious figure frozen in a block of ice. They thawed him out to find that it was the 1940s hero Captain America!The character hadn't appeared in comics in years, but the upstart Avengers suddenly found a member of the "Greatest Generation" in their midst, and no kid who read the comic could fail to be impressed by the character's All-American, never-say-die attitude. And it didn't exactly hurt that he was drawn by Jack Kirby, "the king of the comics!"
If you're not familiar with comic values, we should probably note that The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide doesn't list values for grades above NM- 9.2, and that even 9.2 copies have been trading hands at about 50% above book value. The last 9.4 copy we offered sold for $22,705, and this Twin Cities pedigree copy has eye appeal that at the very least equals it.
While a significant price realized is in the cards for these superb comics, it will never be enjoyed by the man who put the collection together, Gary Dahlberg of Minneapolis, who perished in a tragic fire last year at age 62. Dahlberg, who worked as a bus driver and had aspirations as a young man of becoming a cartoonist, had just retired a few months earlier, planning to sell his house and move further north to Duluth with his girlfriend.
On July 8, 2010, disaster struck. Dahlberg was cleaning the oven in his kitchen, when he apparently got lightheaded from the chemicals and went to lie down. The combustible mixture of cleaning agents caught fire. He died on the way to the hospital.
The entire house was charred, smoke-damaged, and ruined... except for the two front bedrooms, and that's where he kept his comic book collection. No fire or water touched a single book.
Gary's family knew that the comics were worth something, but not exactly how much. They thought that these were worth, perhaps, a few thousand dollars collectively. As it turns out, the final number on these three comics will easily exceed $50,000.
