Description
William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody: Presentation Ammo Belt to Johnny Baker. 36" long leather ammunition or cartridge belt. It is unusual in two respects. First, there is an oval "emblem" that serves as a connecting link between either end of the belt. It has a "carved" profile of a Native American facing right. Secondly, and of utmost importance, it was presented by Buffalo Bill to his "foster son" Johnny Baker. It has impressed lettering on the back side that reads: "To: Johnny Baker - Cowboy Kid/ From: 'Wm.' F. Cody and Mom". The belt has normal wear, commensurate with age, but is soft and flexible.Johnny Baker joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in 1885, remaining with the enterprise until Cody's death in 1917. He formed a close bond not only with Cody as a "foster son", but also with Annie Oakley who nurtured him as a performer. A friendly rivalry ensued, designed to stimulate sales, but Baker admitted he could never outshoot Oakley even on one of his best days. He help to manage the shows, rushing to Cody's deathbed from New York, only to arrive a day late.
