Description

Very Fine Civil War M1840 Cavalry Officer's Saber. 32 1/2" blade retains most of the original luster and is etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse with arms panoplies, scrollwork and spread wing American eagle with shield in the center. The reverse with similar scrollwork and panoplies and large block US. Retains the original heavy leather washer. Hilt retains vestiges of original gilt, with laurel leaf decoration on inboard and outboard faces of branches, scrollwork and leaves where the guard enters the pommel, and laurel leaves with rosette on the face of the pommel cap. Deep relief scrollwork on the top of the quillon. Sharkskin grip near perfect, with just a hint of honest wear and perfect triple wire wrap. Unembellished steel scabbard bright and clean with absolutely no rust or pitting. Just one small dent near the bottom on obverse and some honest wear on the bottom of the drag. Exceptionally fine saber showing just some signs of minor honest use.
