Description

WWII Japanese Army Officers' Shin Gunto Sword.

A standard-issue officers' Shin Gunto with a 25 1/2-inch blade showing a visible temper line (hamon), though finely pitted throughout from exposure and later cleaning. The 10 1/2-inch tsuka is wrapped in regulation military style, retaining its fittings, and mounted with a colonel-grade tassel knot in reddish brown. Contained in its typical steel scabbard [leather-wrapped], now heavily soiled and corroded.

Condition: Poor. The blade surface is rough, with extensive pitting and evidence of past cleaning. The scabbard is in deteriorated condition, with corrosion, heavy soiling, and oxidation damage consistent with prolonged neglect or exposure to the elements. Handle not removable; tang likely corroded.
