Description

W. J. McElroy Confederate Cavalry Sword, CS 1864 Marked.

This is a well-preserved example of a Confederate cavalry sword, manufactured by W. J. McElroy probably late in the war in 1864. Its large three bar brass guard is based off the US 1840/1860 sword family (themselves based off the French 1822). The 35 inch blade has a beautiful dark and even patina. The blade also shows the need for rapid arms manufacture that the late war CSA faced. The edges of the fuller and ridge of the blade are not perfectly straight but show the natural deviations from a straight line that is to be expected from a handmade blade that was one of many being churned out rapidly. The blade ends in a spear point with a false edge, very suitable for the thrust, but the sword has a point of balance a full 9 inches away from the guard, emphasizing the cut from horseback. The grip is wire wrapped leather, and the whole hilt assembly is solid with little to no play or movement. This piece comes with a metal scabbard, matching the blade in its dark patina. The sword on its own weighs 2 lbs 4 oz, and with the scabbard weighs a total of 3 lbs. 11 oz. On one side of the ricasso of the blade there is the making "CS 1864" on one side and "W. J. Elroy & CO MACON" on the other.

Condition: Good. Even patina on scabbard and blade, hilt is solid, no wear on edge. Dark antique look to hilt, leather of grip is pulling away from guard slightly.
