Description

Very Nice Untouched Nashville Plow Works Cavalry Saber, Ex-Gunther Collection. 34 1/4" curved blade with unstopped fuller extending to the guard on the bottom and within 8" of the tip at the top. Blade very nice with smooth light gray patina overall and just a few small, really insignificant scattered areas of salt and peppering. There is also just a hint of sharpening near the mid mid section of the blade but inconsequential and certainly looks to be period. Classic form hilt, identical to Fig. 26-B in Albaugh's Photo Supplement. Leather wrapped grip really excellent with just one scuff at the top else about perfect with tight twisted brass wire wrap. 1/2" plain iron ferrule at the base. The original Gunther accession numbers are on the top of back side of the guard. Scabbard also in very nice untouched condition with brass throat, ring mounts and drag. Interesting one carrying ring is iron and rather large with a split where it was attached, probably a period replacement, while the other is brass. Scabbard with deep dark untouched patina and some scattered old surface rust, There are a couple of minor very old dents near the tip. The crude soldered seam is very evident along the back edge of the scabbard, with the same rather crude quality of workmanship evident in the attachment of the scabbard throat, typical of these swords. A wonderful example of this very Confederate cavalry saber. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.
