Description

Very Fine US M1860 Light Cavalry Saber With Inscription. As noted in the introduction, while this is a very fine, completely original, US M1860 light cavalry saber, we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.
Blade very fine retaining some luster, with just some very light sharpening, with no loss, near the tip. Absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Marked on the obverse ricasso "US / 1864 / A. G. M. and on the reverse "C. Roby / W. Chelmsford / Mass.". Hilt about perfect with nice patina. Grip excellent with just a couple of very small worn spots, wire wrap tight. Scabbard with smooth gray patina with a number of scattered, generally minor, dents. The scabbard is inscribed horizontally between the top ring mount and the throat in block and script letters "SERGT. / E. Tyrell / 2ND / MS CAV."
While expertly done, with matching patina, we are of the opinion this inscription was added post period. Tyrell enlisted in the 2d Mass. on 1/27/63 and mustered out 7/20/65. He was promoted to Sergeant, no date, and Sergeant Major 6/22/65.
