Description
Very Fine Quality And Condition American Eaglehead Officer's Sword C. 1830. 30 1/4" straight blade, with fuller running to within 1/2" of the tip, profusely white etched for 2/3 its length. Blade excellent with much luster and no rust, pitting or nicks. Etching on obverse includes acorn and oak leaf vines, scrollwork and central arms panoply with flags as well as liberty cap, stars and rays. The obverse bears similar motifs as well as American shield, and central theme of tucked wing eagle with hand engraved motto in riband. Unique hilt with large open mouthed eaglehead with feathered backstrap. The outer portion of the guard is decorated with deeply cast leaf and berry motif and the quillon incorporates eagle claws terminating in a ball. The langets profusely decorated with scroll and geometric motifs. The one piece bone grip is beautifully carved with just one very small age hairline else perfect with nice mellow patina and plain 3/8" brass ferrule at the base. Brass scabbard excellent, with just a few minor dents. The ring mounts and the lower 4 1/2" profusely decorated with scroll and leaf engraving. An eagle surmounting an American shield is engraved between the ring mounts. The scabbard shows traces of silver in protected areas, indicating the whole sword was originally silvered and doubtless for an infantry officer.
