Description

Very Fine Leech And Rigdon, Memphis Novelty Works, Confederate Mounted Staff Officer's Saber With CS Pierced in Guard and Old English CS In Blade Etch. 31 1/2" slightly curved blade etched for 2/3 its length. The unstopped fuller runs to within 4" of the tip and 1" of the guard. The etch is nearly identical to that which is displayed on the Cavalry officer's saber. Obverse with arms and flag panoply at the base and two large intricate scrollwork panels. Reverse with two very large and intricate scrollwork panels flanking and old English CS. All etching highlighted with delicate hand engraving. Blade overall excellent with light gray patina overall with some small scattered areas of staining and just one tiny area along on a reverse edge with surface rust and very minor pitting. No edge nicks and deep crisp etching. A most elaborate and arresting etched Confederate blade, as is the one on the Cavalry officer. Regulation style staff officer's style hilt, the floral basket pierced with a CS. The distinctive pommel is plain with the exception of a deep line cast around the top edge. The knucklebow is pierced for a sword knot. Black leather wrapped grip with twisted brass wire wrap Near perfect with tight wire and just some minor surface flakes to the finish of the leather. Heavy backstitched leather scabbard excellent and very sound with just some open stitching, but no seam separation and very light crackling to the finish but no flaking. Plain brass mounts, the ring mounts and drag displaying a distinctive lighter brass color than the mounts themselves. Scroll decorated drag. The top of the throat is closed with the piercing form fitted to the blade. Another superb example of a very scarce and desirable Confederate sword form. Ex-Steve Hess Collection
