Description

U.S. Revolutionary War Infantry Officers' Saber, Circa 1780-1790, Ex Phillip Medicus Collection.

A fantastic Revolutionary War officers' sword with provenance dating back to 1956 and verified by Norm Flayderman. The slightly-curved flat blade measures just over 24-inches, 29 ½-inches overall. The brass hilt features a simple "D" guard and quillon. The brass pommel is moderately damaged. The grip retains most of the leather covering but the wire wrap is absent. The sword comes with the original lot tag from the auction of Philip Medicus' American sword collection which was purchased in its entirely by Norm Flayderman in the 1950s. A more recent Charlton Hall Galleries lot tag from December, 2009 is also present. There is also a small portion of the leather scabbard and metal frog stud, presumably originally belonging to the sword. The sword is featured on page 156 of American Swords from the Philip Medicus Collection, published by Andrew Mowbray, 1998.

Condition: Very good. Some light to moderate areas of surface pitting on the blade with some nicks in the cutting edge. Some areas of leather covering lacking on grip; deep dents and dings on pommel.
