U.S. M1852 Naval Officer's Sword. Very fine with unusual markings. Standard regulation in every respect, totally untouched. Black leather scabbard excellent, with some minor crazing but very sound with no seam openings. Regulation mounts perfect with very nice dark untouched patina and traces of gilt. Regulation style hilt also about perfect, including sharkskin and wire. Again with nice dark patina and traces of gilt. Blade excellent with etching of classic period naval motifs and retaining much original luster with just some scattered staining. No rust, nicks or pitting. The blade is marked Clauberg/ Solingen with standing knight on reverse ricasso. The truly anomalous feature of the sword is that above the obverse ricasso, where a maker's name would often be found incorporated into the blade etch, in stylized, old English letters is "F. Watson". We have been unable to locate any period military goods dealer operating under that name, however, there is a Frank Watson, from Massachusetts, who according to U.S. Naval records entered service 5/12/63 serving as an Acting Master's Mate, and we are of the opinion that this was, in fact his sword. Fascinating M1852 Naval Officer's sword, completely untouched and worthy of considerable additional research.
