Description
The Finest And Rarest Texas General's Grade Houston Made Confederate Sword.This one of a kind custom made sword is the only example known. Measuring 37.5" in length with the original scabbard. The large brass basket hilt is jeweler finished with two branches, enclosing floral work, a large block "C.S.", and a Texas star in the circle below. The single branch guard is slotted at the top to hold a sword knot. The interior of the guard is also jeweler finished with exquisite detailed workmanship. The quillion is an unusual lion/bear shaped foot. The well finished pommel is domed with a single perimeter line along the outside edge. The blade is styled after the famous 18th Century Turkish blades, and is unique from any other Confederate sword. Patterned after a "Kilij", the blade has a long, highly flared false edge called a "Yelman" running from the tip back. The blade form greatly added to the cutting power of the sword. The blade is also finely and deeply etched with crossed cannon barrels, cannon rammers and ancient halberds. It is signed on the ricasso in two lines of bold letters by "J.C. Wilson, Houston". There are only three known maker marked Wilson swords, making them extremely rare, with this example being custom made! The large wide scabbard is tin covered in leather with a large brass mount and middle mount with carrying rings. The drag, similar in size, is also brass with perimeter lines at the top edge.
J.C. Wilson was in the Confederate sword manufacturing business in 1862 and is listed in the Tr-Weekly Telegraph (Houston) on September 3, 1862 as being in the process of selling his sword manufacturing equipment and stock at J.C. Wilson, Main Street (Directory of American Military Goods Dealers, Bazelon & McGuinn, Page 532, Volume 2). He is unquestionably one of the very early war Confederate sword makers whose specimens are extremely scarce and sought after.
Condition: The hilt is all original and untouched with original leather grip. The blade is grey with clearly visible etchings and markings. The scabbard mounts are all in the same chocolate brown patina. The leather is all complete as restored. A truly exceptional sword that is definitely one of the top 10 Confederate Swords in private hands!
