Superb Quality and Condition Silver Grip Civil War Staff Officer's Sword Presented to Captain Charles W. Borbridge 28th Pennsylvania Vols. Borbridge enlisted in the 28th Pennsylvania as a private on 7/4/61. He was promoted to Captain 12/8/62. Wounded in the face at Chancellorsville on 5/2/63 and was commissioned into the Veteran Reserve Corps on 9/22/64. The 28th Pennsylvania the "Goldstream Regiment" participated in every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac, losing 157 men killed and mortally wounded. Borbridge fought with the unit through Antietam, Fredericksburg and many other actions until his wounding at Chancellorsville.The sword utilizes a 32 1/4" quillback blade with two deep narrow central fullers running open to the tip. Etched "IRON PROOF" on the back the obverse displays a central panel with a spread wing eagle with shield and motto above , while the reverse a vine intertwined US flanked by scrollwork. "W. CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN" with standing knight at the base. Blade now bright and clean with no nicks or surface rust and just a small area of very light pitting near the tip. It retains the original leather washer, The hilt is exceptional. The basket pierced with heavy scrollwork and leaves with an intertwined script US at the top. Scroll work on the quillon and where the knucklebow enters the pommel. The knucklebow being pierced for a knot. The pommel is serrated along the edge with scrollwork engraving on the top, and very deep relief cast leaves and berries on the face with central rosette. The silver grip with alternating vertical panels that are plain or decorated with leaves and berries. Hilt about perfect retaining much of the original gilt.
German silver scabbard with leaves and berries cast on the ring mounts which are flanked top and bottom by 2 1/4" deeply cast scrollwork panels. The 8" lower mount with cast scroll work finial at the top and embossed, engraved stippled panels that surround deep relief intertwined leaves and berries with geometric/scroll designs on the drag. Mounts about perfect retaining traces of original gilt, the balance untouched patina. Just a couple of very shallow, really negligible dents on the lower section of the scabbard, which detract nothing. Inscribed between the ring mounts in script and block letters as follows; Presented to / Capt Charles W. Borbridge / Co. C 28th regt Pa. Vols. / By the Members of his Company / as a slight testament to his worth and bravery / and a Tribute / from a grateful Company / to a beloved Commander. Absolutely great inscription.
A magnificent sword presented to a gallant officer from a true 'fighting' regiment.
