Description
Superb Condition Civil War M1850 Foot Officer's Sword with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction, while this is a truly exceptional, absolutely authentic Civil War M1850 foot officer's sword we are of the opinion the inscription is post Civil War.Stunning 29 3/4" blade with most unusual etch. Delicate floral/scrollwork with arms panoply and American shield in the center, with large US near the base on the obverse. The reverse with similar floral/scrollwork with two American flags at the bottom and unique spread wing eagle with stars above and hand engraved feathers, near the top. The blade is unmarked and in truly spectacular condition, with just a few light scratches near the tip and a tiny chip, really negligible, broken from the tip. Retains the original white leather washer. Regulation style hilt about perfect retaining traces of the original gilt. The brown leather and twisted brass wire wrapped grip perfect.
Scabbard (very similar to Ames with heavy 'moulded' form and incised lines) is also near perfect, with just a few minor finish cracks near the lower mount. Plain brass mounts retain much gilt and the sword is inscribed on the top mount in block letters, "PRESENTED TO / LT. CHARLES WHITCOMB / 13th MASSACHUSETTS INF. / BY K.C.W." Again, we believe the inscription to be post Civil War period. A beautiful sword. Accompanied by a complete set of records.
