Description

Spectacular and Stunning Civil War Gold Presentation Cavalry Sword for Captain James F. Dwight.

A massive sword measuring 42 1/2-inches overall, with a 34 1/2-inch blade beautifully etched with military figures, battle motifs, panoplies of arms, Lady Liberty, an eagle and other complimentary foliate designs. The hilt is richly gilded and features extremely detailed foliate designs on the guard and pommel. The pommel cap features what appears to be a large, faceted topaz. The gracefully fluted bone grip completes the hilt. The plated scabbard features richly gilded mounts with ornate and extremely detailed foliate designs. The drag features a checkered background on which a detailed 3-inch tall soldier in full equipment is mounted to the obverse side. The drag is further decorated with military motifs and fine foliate designs. Between the lavishly ornate gilded mounts an oval presentation plaque is mounted and etched "Presented to / CAPT. JAS. F. DWIGHT. / Pro. Mar. Genl. Dept. of the Mo. / by the / Officers & Employees of his Office / June 10th, 1863".

James Fowler Dwight enlisted in the Fremont Hussars (4th Missouri Cavalry) as a Second Lieutenant and quickly rose through the ranks. He was promoted Major in the 11th Missouri Cavalry. He was appointed Provost Marshal General of the Department of Missouri. He mustered out in 1865 as a full Colonel.
