Description

Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword.

Sword measuring 40-inches overall with a 34-inch double-edged blade, nearly 1 1/2-inches at its widest point, a notably broad example reflecting the cutting strength of the type. The steel baskethilt, forged from multiple pieces and assembled in traditional fashion, shows a slightly flared form with hand-cut decorative edging, characteristic of straightforward, functional examples. The grip appears to have been re-wrapped, with only traces of wire binding now remaining within the grooves. Weighing approximately 2.4 lbs.

Note: Basket-hilted broadswords were the signature weapon of Scotland during the 17th and 18th centuries, prized for their broad blades and protective hilts. Produced in both ornate officer's versions and simpler soldier's types, they became enduring symbols of Highland arms.

Condition: Blade with a bright patina and scattered areas of peppering. The hilt with a softer gray patina showing pitting and blemishes. Pommel with light wear from age and handling. Typical fine marks and blemishes present to metal.
