Description

Rare Confederate Cavalry Officer's Saber By B. Douglas & Co., Columbia, S. C. Very heavy an wide 34 1/4" blade The wide unstopped fuller runs to within 1 1/2" of the hilt and 8" of the tip. Blade in superb untouched condition with absolutely no rust pitting or nicks and just a smooth 'spotted dark patinas. Retains the original double thickness leather washer with a standard oval leather washer on the top and large oval leather washer with serrated edge underneath. The hilt is in wonderful condition retaining 70% of the original gilt. Rather crude cast decoration on the top of the quillon and on the inner and outer faces of the outboard branches. The pommel is plain. The knucklebow flares slightly and exhibits a distinctive disc where it enters the pommel. The leather wrapped grip with tight twisted brass wire wrap, perfect. Iron scabbard with crude brazed lap seam on the back edge, brazed brass throat, brass ring mounts with brass carrying rings and distinctive iron drag with accentuated finials on each end. The scabbard with absolutely no rust, pitting or dents and retains about 50% of what appears to be the original black Japanned finish mixing with smooth deep dark patina. A remarkable untouched example of this nearly impossible to obtain Confederate Cavalry Officer's saber. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.
