Rare Confederate Boyle & Gamble Staff & Field Officers'
Sword.29 1/2-inch slightly curved blade measuring just over an inch at the hilt with single fullers running to within 8 1/2-inches of the tip. Both sides of the blade are etched: the obverse featuring foliate designs, crossed cannons surmounted by a shield bearing "C.S.A." and a Confederate flag; the reverse with similar foliate designs, a shield with 13 stars and a panoply of arms. Leather throat washer. The gilded-brass hilt features a counterguard which contains the letters "CS" on a ribbon encircled by a wreath which in turn is surmounted by a star. Floral designs and an ear of corn also appear in the guard. The number "1" is stamped on the underside of the guard and again on the pommel where it engages the knuckle bow. There is crude foliate design on the pommel. The brown leather-covered grip has a single strand of brass wire wrap. Leather scabbard with brass mounts and drag. Each have very simple line borders.
Provenance: Ex. Fred Edmunds collection.
Condition: Very good. The blade displays an overall milky-gray patina with a series of minor nicks in the cutting edge. The etching is a bit faint. Light scuffing to the leather on the grip with a small gouge on the reverse side. The leather of the scabbard has shrunk a bit and has cracking to the surface. Despite being a bit dry it remains sound.
