Description

Persian Shamshir, 18th Century.

Having a 29-inch curved Damascus [Wootz] blade. Straight crossguard with fluted cap finials and languets. Bone grip scales. Steel pommel cap. Interesting to note, Middle Eastern blacksmiths used wootz ingots from the Indian subcontinent to produce extraordinary steel weaponry throughout the middle ages, known as Damascus steel. According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor by Stone, The Persian sabre is purely a cutting weapon, the point being practically useless owing to the extreme curvature [page 550].

Condition: Very good. Blade showing age wear, light pitting and patina. Grip with wear and stress cracks [contained]. Pommel cap and crossguard with wear, patina.
