Description
One Of The Finest US M1850 Staff & Field Officer's Swords We've Ever Cataloged. Overall about mint condition exhibiting the finest of quality. 33" mint blade etched for 2/3 its length. Scrollwork, military trophies, American eagle and shield and riband with E Pluribus Unum motto on the obverse. The obverse ricasso displays a decorated inlaid brass disc marked "Proof". "Iron Proof" etched on the back of the blade. The obverse exhibiting similar motifs but with a large block US and American flag. The blade overall absolutely stunning. Regulation style hilt exhibiting the finest quality casting and finish and the face of the pommel engraved with an American shield. The hilt overall retains 95% of the original gold wash. Sharkskin grip perfect with triple wire wrap. The scabbard retains 99% of the original brown finish with just a light coating of patina. Absolutely no dents or dings, perfect. Heavily decorated brass mounts perfect, retaining 90% of the original gold wash. Top mount engraved with shield at the top doubtless intended for the application of an inscription. The lower half of the mount decorated with sunburst and rays. Six five pointed stars stamped on the ring mount. Middle mount with floral work on stippled background, with the ring mount similarly decorated. The lower mount is decorated with an arc of stars at the top surmounting a tucked wing eagle, blow which is an American shield surrounded by floral/scrollwork on the lower portion. US engraved at the bottom of the mount, which includes a decoratively scalloped drag. The reverse of the mounts are plain. Brass throat also retains 90% of the original gilt.
