Description
One Of The Finest H. Marshall, Atlanta, Ga. Confederate Wooden Scabbard Cavalry Sabers We've Ever Cataloged. 32" curved blade with the wide shallow fuller extending to within 1/2" of the hilt and 4 1/2" of the tip. Blade really excellent with no rust, pitting or nicks and just a few minor forging flaws. Generally smooth and light gray with some scattered areas of darker patina, totally untouched. The hilt is perfect with dark untouched patina. The guard itself is rather small and nearly flat, the outboard branches rather poorly finished and slightly rounded. Plain pommel cap also rather poorly finished with a small casting flaw. Brown leather covered grip with single strand iron wire wrap mint with 1/4" brass ferrule at the base. Two piece wooden scabbard about perfect with nice mellow patina. The 4 1/8" sheet iron upper mount fastened at the base on each side with two pins. Brass brazed throat, crude brass ring mount with iron carrying ring. 2" sheet iron middle with crude brass ring mount and iron carrying ring is fastened by a small pin at one upper and one lower corner on each side. The 4 1/2" sheet iron lower mount, with brass drag is fastened with two small pins at the top on both sides, the pins on the reverse missing, if indeed they were ever in place as there appear to be no holes in the wood underneath. All mounts with deep dark patina and no rust pitting or dents. A truly outstanding example of this uniquely Confederate saber, with few examples surviving with the original scabbards, much less in this superb condition. Ex-Steve Hess Collection
