Description

Late Edo Mino-Den Wakizashi Attributed to the Aizu Kanesada School, Signed "Izumi no Kami Kanesada" with Spurious Eishō 13 (1516) Date.

A finely forged wakizashi of the Mino tradition, displaying a broad shinogi-zukuri form with shallow curvature, a medium chū-kissaki, and iori-mune. The blade measures 43.8 cm (17 1/4-inches) with a base width of 3.02 cm (1 3/16-inch) and a tip width of 1.98 cm (13/16th of an inch). The tight masame hada is complemented by a lively midare-ba hamon mixing pointed and rounded elements, characteristic of late Mino workmanship. The ubu tang, with one mekugi-ana and taka-no-ha yasurime, is inscribed "Izumi no Kami Kanesada Saku" with a spurious Eishō 13 (1516) date. While evoking the famed Kanesada II, the blade's workmanship identifies it as Shinshintō-era, likely by a late-generation smith of the Aizu Kanesada lineage in Mutsu Province, circa 1850-1868. Mounted in complete buke-zukuri koshirae of refined late Edo to early Meiji style, the sword features a circular iron tsuba with applied mon, decorated copper-alloy fuchi-kashira, brass seppa, and a black lacquered saya measuring 52 cm (20 1/2-inches). The hilt is wrapped in black lacquered ito over white samegawa, with menuki of birds in flight. The kozuka slot houses a gilt-handled kogatana signed "Kanesada" and decorated with a water wheel motif, also likely gimei.

Note: Accompanied by a Japanese prefectural registration paper (Torokusho), confirming the sword's lawful registration in Japan. While administrative in nature and not an NBTHK or NTHK attribution, it affirms the sword's recognized status within Japan's cultural property system. [No. 072503].

Condition: The blade remains in healthy polish, with fine jigane and an active hamon. The koshirae shows light wear and minor lacquer loss consistent with age, while the kogatana displays patination and surface wear.
