Description
Koto Tanto. Mino Province.19 1/2-inches in overall length, with a 11 1/2-inch blade. Unsigned, Circa 1575. Rare World War 2 service mounts. Fine midare temper line. The history of the Koto blades and the Mino Province is very interesting, these blades are considered treasures. Hand forged blades that were very dense and were specifically made to separate the skill of the Japanese smith from any Chinese influence. These blades had a very hard outer core and a very soft inner core so they would stand up in battle. There are many legends attached to the possession of a Koto blade and some of these legends have to do with the destruction of evil demons and the ability to heal the wounded and sick. The Mino province was a crossroads and a military location from 1713. An important part of treasured Japanese culture and history.
Consignor notes stated; "This is an old blade that was placed into a military scabbard and was taken to war by a Japanese officer. It most likely had a matching sword that was his families collection. He probably died and this was brought back by a G.I."
