Description

Knightly Sword, Oakeshott Type X, Circa 12th Century.

This is a wonderful example of an Ewart Oakeshott's Type X sword, as described in The Sword in the Age of Chivalry. With an overall length of 36 ½ inches, its 30 5/8 long blade tapers gently to a point, with a wide and shallow fuller that runs all the way to the end of the blade. Weighing below 2 pounds, with a point of balance 6 ½ inches from the crossguard, this sword would have been nimble and authoritative in the cut. Swords of this type were popular from the age of the Vikings in the 11th century through the era of the Crusades in the 13th century. Accompanied by a shield, and wielded either on foot or horseback, weapons such as our piece today were seen across Europe, and this sword is a rare opportunity to own a piece of the early Medieval era.

Condition: Good excavated condition. Dark patina throughout. Crossguard is loose on grip, but blade is structurally sound and pommel is secure.
