Description

Group of Three Civil War Era Swords.

Comprising: 1.) 1860 Light Cavalry Saber. First, there is this nice example of the 1860 style of cavalry sabers. At 40 ½ overall length, its 35 inch blade has a rounded spine and has a point of balance 5 ½ inches from the brass three bar guard. The grip is well wrapped in wire bound leather, though one can see the wood core at the guard end of the grip. It comes with a metal scabbard and has a leather sword knot as well. The sword alone weighs 2 lbs. 4 oz, and with the scabbard weighs over 3 lbs. 8 oz. The only marking on the sword is CO L E HYDE stamped on back of pommel. 2.) Non-Regulation Foot Officers Sword. Next this is an interesting non-regulation foot officer's sword, with a hilt in the style of the French 1845 Foot Officer's Saber, which the US 1850 Foot Officer's Saber copied. The blade is the most unique part, as it is a non-regulation blade for either an American or French saber. Its long 35 ½ in blade is reminiscent of earlier Napoleonic swords, specifically the famous 1796 British Light Cavalry Saber and the myriad swords which copied it. The long singe edge cutting blade, with long shallow fuller and a point of balance 6 inches from the hilt, seems to have seen military action, as there are notable notches in the lower third of the blade consistent with defensive edge damage. The beautifully done brass guard has the mark "Fonson A Brux" under the curling back quillon, indicating that this piece was commissioned from the Belgian Fonson family, a notable sword making family based out of Brussels during the mid to late 1800s. There appears to have been another maker's mark on the base of the blade, but details of it cannot be made out. The grip is of uncovered wood, with wire wrapping in recesses. It is a very handsome and unique piece. 3.) Shortened Model 1860 Staff and Field Officers Presentation sword. Finally there is this interesting piece, a Model1860 Staff and Field Officers Presentation sword that has been shortened. The 19 inch blade is still has the remnants of its original decorative work, and the whole piece comes out to 25 inches. This hilt still retains its finely wire wrapped shagreen grip, embossed brass guard with folding side, and embossed pommel. Comes with a scabbard.

Condition: 1.) Very good, some discoloration on blade and scabbard metal parts, minimal movement in hilt. 2.) Good. Minimal movement in hilt, spots of rust and patina on blade, light edge damage. 3.) Fine. Hilt is fairly loose but folding guard is retained, and there is sign of age on the brass of the hilt.
