Description
Grosser Saxon Ulan Officer's Presentation Saber. This magnificent saber has fine gilted brass hilt fittings with a heavily-chased lion head pommel with red glass eyes, floral embellished backstrap, oak leaf pattern knuckle-bow and crossguard guard with lion head quillon and the cipher of King Albert of Saxony (1873-1902) affixed to the langet. The reverse langet is personalized with the engraved coat of arms of the recipient of the sword. Black sharkskin grip shows light surface wear but no rips or tears and is complete with tight, triple-twisted silver wire wrap. The curved, quill-back blade measuring 34 2/5" in length shows light surface wear and two minor nicks to the cutting edge. The maker's mark is below the langet. The blade is Damascus with a gold inlay 7" etched presentation panel that reads, in raised gothic letters, "Freiherr von Marschalk s/l [Seinen Leben] von der Wense". The saber was presented by the Baron von Marschalk to Ernst August von der Wense of the Ulanen-Regiment "Kaiser Franz Josef von Österreich, König von Ungarn" (1. Königlich Sächsisches) Nr. 17 [Lancers Regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" (1st Royal Saxon) No. 17]. The curved scabbard shows light wear and retains the deep blued finish on the scabbard shell. There are two brass suspension bands, but only one suspension ring, the other was removed years ago. The bluing was in accordance with the 1908 regulations which required sword scabbards to be painted black or blued. These massive swords are the most sought after of all Imperial edged weapons. Length in scabbard is 40.75". Excellent.Auction Info
