Description

French Two-Handed Marked Broadsword.

Approximately 67-inches overall with a 49 1/2-inch wavy blade with parrying hooks, [or Parierhaken in German]. Maker's mark present under parrying hooks. 18-inch massive blade guard with decorative primitive pattern throughout and rolled coil ends [rings]. Leather-wrapped two-handed handle with raised features including scattered steel studs that lead to a pattern/engraved iron fluted pommel cap. Note: Also known as a Zweihänder in German, these massive swords were not meant to be carried in sheaths, but rather across the shoulder like a halberd. See, A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor by Stone for similar examples. Consignor notes states "Dopple-Slanger Wavy Blade French 1480".

Condition: Very good for its age and configuration. Finish primarily a smooth grey age patina with noticeable age wear and pitting with spots to blade. Cracking and discoloration spots to leather. Some blade finish areas suggest cleaning and added aging. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
