Description

Exceptional US M1840 Heavy Cavalry Officer's Saber. Likely a Civil War period example, exhibiting superb quality and exceptional condition. 34" curved blade very fine, smooth and light gray with absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Obverse with a 6 1/2" scroll flanked panel with spread wing eagle, shield, riband and rays. Reverse with similar panel with large elaborate U. S. and flanking scrolls and vines. Marked at the base on the reverse "P. D. L."in oval. Retains the original thin leather washer. Very heavy hilt about mint, retaining 60% of the original gilt. Branches with cast and engraved laurel leaf and geometric decoration on the face, scroll work where the guard enters the pommel. Pommel with very deep laurel leaf decoration. The reverse of the knuckle bow is completely covered with deep scroll and leaf engraved decoration. Sharkskin grip perfect with original tight brass wire wrap. Top of the quillon also profusely decorated with deeply cast engraved scroll work and floral motifs. Steel scabbard also very heavy. Bright and clean with absolutely no dents and just a few very small patches of minor surface rust and salt and peppering. Really exceptionally nice. Large heavy plain brass mounts and carrying rings, Brass throat held in place on both sides by small brass screw. A beautiful saber and a rare form we have not previously encountered.
