Description
Exceptional Silver Mounted Staff Officers' Sword Presented to Captain William Munk, Commander of Battery D, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery.A 34-inch slightly curved bright blade etched with the "W. H. HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA" mark on the obverse ricasso with a spread-wing eagle with shield in a gilt-accented panel. The reverse side is etched "IRON PROOF" and features a gilt accented panel with "U.S." within floral borders. The gilded-brass hilt is richly accented with oak leave sprays and an open worked guard with an eagle and shield. The silver grip is engraved with a combination of foliate and geometric designs. The metal scabbard features large gilded-brass mounts and drag. The upper mount has a separately applied eagle within a foliate frame; the lower mount has a separately applied bust profile of George Washington within a foliate frame; and the drag features a separately applied profile bust of Lady Liberty. Even the mounting rings are finely decorated. An oval plaque mounted between the mounts bears the presentation: "Presented to / Capt. Wm. Munk / BY THE / Members of Battery D. 1st Pa. Res. / Lt Artillery as a token of Respect / 1865."
The Civil War database contains little on Munk's service history. No enlistment date is given but the records show he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on November 28, 1863, 1st Lieutenant January 21, 1864 and Captain March 9, 1865. He mustered out with his Battery on June 30, 1865. At the Battle of Cedar Creek in October of 1864, Confederate General Joseph Kershaw's division spearheaded the opening assault and overran Munk's battery causing the Union troops to fall back and reorganize before regaining the lost ground. A wonderful sword worthy of more research.
Condition: Excellent.
