Description
Early 17th Century Rapier. This fine example of a 17th century cut-and-thrust rapier has a strong presence, both as a show piece and in hand. At a total length of 46 inches and 3.26 lbs., its 40 inch blade starts broad for a rapier, then tapers gradually down to a thrusting point. The blade has a point of balance 3 ½ inches from the protective finger rings, and the sword feels well balanced for the cut-and-thrust style of Italian fencing described in Giovanni dall'Agocchie's Dell'Arte di Scrima Libri Tre or Angelo Viggiani's Lo Schermo (both from the late 16th century). The piece has fine decorations on the blade, with the fuller being surrounded by a decorative design terminating in a cross, and designs of stars and shooting stars being etched into the fuller itself. The guard is also a wonderful example of a complex hilt, with a knuckle guard, two side rings on the left side, and three on the right. There is a repeating off-set bar motif in the guard, seen best on the middle of the knuckle guard and the right siderings. The pommel is of plummet shape with strong fluting, and the grip is of fine wirework capped on each end with Turks head knots.
Condition: Good. Construction is solid. Back quillion is detached. Patina on the metal surfaces. Even rust on one side of the blade. Blade is slightly bent in last third.
