Description

Confederate James Conning Cavalry Saber.

35 1/2-inch slight curved blade with a single wide fuller running to within 9-inches of the point. Marked "JAMES CONNING / MOBILE" and numbered "353" on the reverse ricasso. Brass guard, knucklebow with two branches joining at an elliptical counterguard. The number "369" stamped on top of the counterguard. Leather covered wooden grip with wire wrapping. Iron scabbard with two mounting rings, likely mated with the sword at a later date.

Condition: Good. Blade with a uniform gray patina, many small nicks in the cutting edge; point dull. Leather on grip scuffed and missing in a few small areas. Iron scabbard uniformly pitted but not dented. From the Collection of Dr. Phillip R. Rutherford
