Colonel John C. Hays Mexican War Cased Presentation Sword.
30-inch double edged blade with central fuller. Ricasso marked: AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS. Each side of blade elaborately acid etched with floral and scroll. E. PLURIBUS / UNUM and Eagle etched to right side. Half clamshell guard with cast foliate wreath and American eagle. Dragon head cross guard. Silver hilt Aquamarine stone mounted in urn shaped pommel. Texas five pointed star and liberty cap. Chain guard. Metal scabbard features inscription reading: PRESENTED TO / COL. JOHN C. HAYS / BY THE STATE OF TEXAS AS A TRIBUTE OF HONOR / FOR HIS GALLANTRY AND CONDUCT DURING / THE MEXICAN WAR OF 1846 TO 1848 / MAY 20, 1848. Also engraved with panoply design and applied foliate decoration near tip, applied foliate with Texas star and carved eagle above. Three mounting rings. No decorative markings to reverse side. Contained in wooden fitted case with blue felt lining and three compartments, containing sash and Ames decorative eagle sword belt. Sword pictured and described in The Ames Sword Company, by John D. Hamilton, page 117. This is one of the most important presentation swords ever offered by Heritage Auctions.

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity prepared by Dan Cullity.

Condition: Fine. Overall showing normal age and handling wear, some flaking to blade tip and scattered patches of pitting. Case with scuffs, dings and mars to the outside. Patina present to brass furniture. Some marred screws. Accessories with age and handling wear.
