Description
Civil War Courtney & Tennent Charleston, S. C. Imported Confederate Naval Cutlass. Very nice example of this very scarce Confederate cutlass imported by Charleston military outfitters William Courtney and Gilbert Tennent at the beginning of the war. The firm established contracts with several manufacturers in England to supply them with Confederate navy materiel including Robert Mole & Sons, who supplied these swords. This example is nicely marked "Mole" on the back of the blade and "Courtney & Tennent / Charleston. S. C" in a rectangular die stamp on the reverse ricasso. The 19 1/2" blade, with single narrow central fuller is excellent with just some staining and a some tiny, really negligible, nicks, the balance a smooth gray patina. Round faced two branch brass guard about perfect with nice untouched patina. The riveted plaque grips show wear and some minor shrinkage on the obverse but are near perfect on the reverse. The original brass mounted leather scabbard is complete but the tip has separated, with no loss, the back stitched seam is open, and on the lower portion of the scabbard the edges have split, again, however, with no loss. Brass mounts, attached with heavy brass staples excellent with nice patina, only one dent near tip, and throat retains the original frog stud. A very nice untouched and absolutely authentic example of this very scarce Confederate sword.Auction Info
