C. Roby U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Saber Attributed to Captain John D. Conley, Co. H, 16th Maine Volunteer Infantry.34 ½-inch slightly curved, bright blade stamped "C. Roby / W. Chelmsford / Mass." on the obverse ricasso and "US / 1864 / AGM" on the reverse ricasso. Gilded-brass hilt with wire-wrapped leather grips. Brown leather sword knot stamped "E. GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS". Iron scabbard with two carrying rings, complete with brown leather carrying strap. John D. Conley was a resident of Bangor, Maine who enlisted as a 1st Sergeant at the age of 33 years old on August 14, 1862, mustering into H. Company, 16th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Lieutenant in December, 1862 and Captain in May, 1863. The 16th Maine fought in most of the major campaigns of the war including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Gettysburg and Petersburg. Conley was listed as a POW on August 18, 1864 at Weldon Railroad near Petersburg. He was initially imprisoned near Richmond but later moved to a prison near Salisbury, North Carolina. He was exchanged in February of 1865 and returned to his regiment in April, 1865. It was at this time Conley was presented with this saber. The saber remained in the Conley family for many years. The sword comes with a one page typed letter dated December, 27, 1971 and signed by Bill Conley which states in part: "When Conley returned home he tagged his sword and stored it away with the rest of his army equipment. The sword and saber belt have stayed with the Conley family since that time." The sword comes with an archive of research material including photocopies of muster rolls, records and letters of promotion, etc.
Condition: Very good. The blade with a smooth gray patina, a few tiny nicks in the cutting edge, and some scuffing to the leather wrapping on the grip, otherwise a very solid example.
