Description
Beautiful Identified British Naval Officers' Cutlass Circa 1820.18-inch single-edged curved blade, 2 ½-inches wide at the hilt. The blade is simple engraved with foliate designs which have been accented in gilt. The gilded brass hilt features a single cast figural grip terminating in a lion's head pommel. Two small chains connect the pommel to the quillons. The leather scabbard has a gilded-brass throat, mount and tip. The throat is engraved on the obverse "Henry Edward / Coffin". Henry Edward Coffin entered the Royal Navy in 1805. He served with the expedition to Egypt, and witnessed, as Midshipman, the destruction of the French line-of-battle ships Robuste and Lion, off Cape Cette. He ended his career as a Commander.
Condition: Very good. Faint traces of blue on the blade, the remainder with a smooth gray patina; much of the gilt remains on the hilt; the scabbard is crazed but remains supple.
