Description

American Eaglehead Officer's Straight Sword Doubtless The Work Of F. W. Widmann C. 1830 30" straight blade generally with overall smooth dark gray patina. Decorated for 1/3 its length with finely engraved floral and military motifs. Blade with no rust, pitting or nicks and retaining traces of the original fire blue and gilt. Knucklebow with cast leaf and scroll decoration with more substantial scrollwork where it enters the nicely delineated typically Widmann eagle head. Grip tight wrapped with twisted copper wire with 3/4" ferrule at the base bearing the typical grapevine motif. Hilt overall about perfect with nice untouched patina. Shell like quillon. The all brass scabbard is missing the throat, and virtually covered with elaborate engraving. The top of the scabbard engraved with a Roman fasces with intertwined oak leaf vines topped by a liberty cap. Between the two ring mounts which are each 3/4" wide with grapevine motifs, is a 4" panel with spread wing eagle, riband and motto, with stars above and clouds below. The lower portion of the scabbard exhibits a 15" panel covered with a vine and leaf motif. The upper portion of the scabbard is excellent with the lower portion exhibiting a number of dents and one crack but no breaks and certainly worthy of restoration. A nice representative example of a Widmann sword.
