Description

American Eagle-Head Pommel Officers' Sword.

29-inch curved blade with wide fullers on each side running the entire length of the blade. The blade is 1 3/8-inches wide at the hilt. Illegible maker name (WOO???EY) on the back of the blade near the hilt. Gilded-brass hilt with pierced counterguard and elegant fluted knuckle bow. Eagle-head pommel with feathers extending the guard. Wooden grip with twisted-wire wrapping. Leather scabbard with gilded-brass throat, mount and tip.

Condition: Good. Blade with a mottled-gray patina with areas of light surface pitting. 80-85% of the gilt remains on the hilt. Where the counterguard meets the knuckle bow there appears to be an old solder repair. Some chips out of the wooden grip near the pommel. Scuffing and gouges to the leather of the scabbard and the brass furniture has some denting. From the Collection of Dr. Phillip R. Rutherford
