Description
A Superb Swept-Hilt Rapier, 17th Century.Measuring approximately 47 3/4 inches in overall length, this exceptional rapier features a 40 1/2-inch straight blade adorned with three fullers. Each fuller is inscribed with names, meticulously framed within decorative symbols. On one side, the inscriptions read: PETERVS [X] PAVLVS / IOHANNES [X] ANDREAS / THOMAS [X] IACOBVS, while the opposite side is marked: [X] PHILIPPVS [X] IACOBVS [X] / BARTHOLOMEVS [X] MATHIAS / SIMON [X] THADAEVS [X]. Both sides of the ricasso feature gilded armorers' marks, further enhancing the blade's historical significance and authenticity.
The blade, at its widest, measures 1 inch, perfectly complemented by a 3 1/2-inch wire-bound grip, offering both functionality and aesthetic elegance. The finely chiseled cast hilt includes straight quillons, offering refined detail work and precise craftsmanship. The ovoid pommel, topped with a button, is similarly chiseled, with elaborate detailing depicting battle scenes on horseback, executed with remarkable depth and intricacy, a testament to the artisan's skill.
This swept-hilt rapier, with its combination of detailed chiseling, historical inscriptions, and high-quality materials, exemplifies the craftsmanship of 17th-century swordsmiths, making it a prized possession for collectors and historians alike.
Condition: Overall, the sword is in fine condition as configured (hilt is a later replacement), exhibiting typical dark age wear consistent with its age. The blade and hilt show a well-preserved even patina, adding to the historical character of the piece. Fine scratches are present on the metal, as expected from handling over time, along with a few minor nicks along the blade edge. Notably, one of the quillons shows a stable stress crack [in the casting], noticed only while cataloguing the sword, which remains secure [but wobbly] and does not compromise the structural integrity of the piece.
