Description
A Fine Italian Embossed Gilded Cup Hilt Rapier.This example of an Italian cup-hilt rapier measures approximately 45-inches in overall length, featuring a meticulously crafted 37-inch pierced blade, gracefully to a width of about 1-inch at its broadest point. The large, intricately embossed wrought iron cup is adorned with lavish gilt detailing, featuring delicate foliage motifs and Roman figures in relief. The 16-inch diameter cup displays a figured border and extensive wrought ironwork within, reflecting the craftsmanship of a superior artisan. The 3 1/2-inch grip is wrapped in wire, capped with an elegantly decorated pommel and button, both incorporating elements of classical antiquity. The straight quillons end in pierced designs, enhancing the visual complexity of the piece. Weighing approximately 2 1/2 pounds, this rapier was undoubtedly the possession of a gentleman of high station, given its refined construction and ornamental features.

Condition: Very good, showing expected age-related wear to blade with nicks and marks as well as a scattered dark age patina. The cup-hilt displays surface pitting and a rich dark patina, with fine scratches visible throughout. Some interior areas of the hilt exhibit rough metalwork and light pitting, with a darkened appearance. There are some stains that should clean well with proper care, but others that might require a professional. The blade and cup are slightly loose, but the overall structure remains sound.
